General description

EMBRC follows a strategic landscape driven by current international interests’ and priorities: Sustainable marine resource management, Human health, Biodiversity, Food security & climate change.
The consortium will enable the delivery of services to the marine community and increasing numbers of scientists who have turned to marine model organisms to investigate fundamental questions in biology.
Additional facilities are needed to better integrate marine biology and ecology with all areas of basic biological research.

Underpinning technologies and platforms: Common services

  • Microscopy, imaging
  • Biochemistry
  • Omics – proteomics, genomics transcriptomics, metabolomics
  • Genetic resources – mutants, stock centres
  • Bioinformatics
  • Analytical facilities
  • Information resources, archival collections, repositories, databases, time series
  • Culture and husbandry -- Large scale experimental facilities, mesocosms
  • Sampling, collecting, surveying

New and improved services will be provided for research, training, education and innovation, and access to resources will be provided both on site (to resident and non-resident users) and remotely (e.g. sending samples, e-resources).

Users

End-users are expected to comprise not only marine biologists and in-house staff, but also researchers from other scientific institutes, universities, governmental and NGO agencies, SMEs and industry, who wish to apply cutting-edge approaches to study marine model organisms across the biological, biomedical and environmental sciences.

The EMBRC will provide a single point of entry to research infrastructure in marine biology (trans-national facilities and agreed sharing of nationally controlled services) to enable European researchers to compete at the highest international level in support of national and European strategic scientific objectives.
