Diving into Marine Minds: IMBRSea's Second International Symposium

For a second year, the milstone event brought 200 students with more than 45 nationalities together to study and better understand the ocean

From 24 to 28 June, the annual symposium of the International Master in Marine Biological Resources (IMBRSea), took place for the second time at the Université de Bretagne Occidentale in Brest (France). With more than 200 students participating from more than 45 nationalities this event was again a milestone in how education can bridge nations, generations and disciplines in the context of a more sustainable use of our ocean.

IMBRSea is a joint Master programme organized by ten European universities in the field of marine sciences (Ghent University – BE, University of the Algarve – PT, Sorbonne University – FR, University of Oviedo – ES, Galway Mayo Institute of Technology – IE, University of the Basque Country – ES, Polytechnic University della Marche – IT, Université de Bretagne Occidentale – FR, Université Côte d’azur – FR and Bergen University – NO), supported by a large network of stakeholders (including Universities, Research institutions, Companies). IMBRSea is also considered as the flagship Master programme of the European Marine Biological Resource Centre (EMBRC-ERIC), a pan-European Research Infrastructure for marine biology and ecology research, which aims to answer fundamental questions regarding the health of oceanic ecosystems in a changing environment, enable new technologies to further our investigation capabilities, support life-science breakthrough discoveries with the use of marine biological models, and continue long-term marine monitoring efforts. The IMBRSea programme supports the UN efforts to reverse the cycle of decline in ocean health and gather ocean stakeholders worldwide behind a common framework that will ensure ocean science can fully support countries in creating improved conditions for sustainable development of the Ocean.

A recently published study from the European Marine Board, “Training the 21st Century Marine Professional”, emphasizes the need for young marine professionals with a multidisciplinary background in order to cope with the challenges of a sustainable blue economy. During the annual symposium students will together with marine professionals from businesses and academia exchange ideas on how to study and protect our Oceans.

On 24 June the symposium was opened by two keynote lectures by dr. Sophie Bertrand and prof. Ann Vanreusel and an interactive scientific exhibition in which students showcase what they learned during their professional practice experiences. During the second day students participated in one of the fifteen workshops offered by potential future employers focusing on transferable skills in marine sciences. On the 26th and 27th, graduating students defended their thesis orally in one of the open public sessions.
