VLIZ recruits: IT Operations Engineer

In order to accommodate the growth of the institute, VLIZ is recruiting an IT Operations Engineer (m/f/x, 100% employment, permanent contract) for immediate employment. You will be employed within the IT group of 9 IT specialists.

 

Situation

Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) is a scientific institution that strengthens the accumulation of marine knowledge and the excellence of marine research in Flanders. VLIZ is a coordination and information platform, a hub for marine and coastal research, also functioning as international contact point. Important activities are national and international networking, information and data management, science communication for policy, industry, education and the wider public and logistic support of research.

In 2017, VLIZ signed a new covenant with the Flemish Region for the period 2017‑2021 in which new mandates were assigned to it. Since then, an important additional strategic goal for VLIZ has been the initiation, support, promotion and execution of innovative and multidisciplinary marine research, and this at the service of, in collaboration with or complementary to Flemish and international marine research groups.
In order to accommodate the growth of the institute, VLIZ recruits an IT Operations Engineer (m/f/x, 100% employment, permanent contract) for immediate employment. You will be employed within the IT group of 9 IT specialists.

Main responsibilities

  • You are responsible for the system management of the VLIZ server infrastructure. This includes the installation and updating of: the hardware, the virtualization platform and the virtual servers running on it
  • You are responsible for the application management on these machines. This includes installing, migrating and keeping the applications and software up-to-date
  • You monitor the availability, performance and alerts of both servers and applications to keep them as stable, reliable and performant as possible
  • You implement, monitor and maintain the LAN network
  • You take the appropriate measures to guarantee the safety of the above systems
  • You work together in a small team and report to the IT division manager
  • When required, participate in a permanence rotation

 

Profile, skills and attitude

  • Bachelor or master in computer science, or equivalent through experience
  • Thorough knowledge of operating systems: Windows, Linux, VMWare, OpenStack, Embedded Oses
  • Thorough knowledge of application software such as Apache, Tomcat, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server, MongoDB
  • Good knowledge of LAN networks, protocols and (DELL) switches
  • Good knowledge of automation tools (bash, Ansible, Docker, etc.) is recommended
  • Knowledge of development systems PHP, SQL, HTML, Javascript is recommended
  • Knowledge of applications such as Geoserver, Geonetwork, RShiny, Atlassian products, HAProxy, OpenLDAP ... is a plus
  • Language knowledge: thorough knowledge of Dutch and/or English
  • Demonstrable capacities of working in a team
  • You have an eye for detail: quality service is crucial for you
  • You have a good problem solving capacity and you are resistant to stress

A contract of indefinite duration (fixed frame position) and a salary scale according to qualifications and experience, following the salary scales of the Flemish Government.
