Access to aquariums/mesocosms for experiments with capacities ranging from 5L to 600L and two recirculation systems installed with a total volume of 2300 L (6 tanks and filtration sump). The systems can operate with salt, brackish or freshwater and all have water aeration. Rooms have temperature and photoperiod control. Team of specialized technicians available to provide assistance before and during the experiments.

The Blue Biotechnology and Ecotoxicology Culture Collection (LEGE-CC) is a collection of microorganisms from CIIMAR, registered in the World Federation for Culture Collections (WFCC). The Culture Collection comprises more than 386 different cyanobacterial strains, several of them unique among the (phylogenetic) diversity of the group. Live culture supply of 386 cyanobacterial strains, genomic DNA, algal extracts and freeze-dried material. These isolates have been obtained since 1991, from samples collected in different environments and locations mainly in Portugal (including Madeira and Azores Islands), but also elsewhere (e.g. Australia, Brazil, Colombia, Morocco, Mexico). http://www.ciimar.up.pt/legecc/

Description:

The outdoor mesocosm system consist of three independent parallel flow-through open systems, with seawater at ambient (400 ppm) and elevated (>400 ppm) CO2 concentration which enable the simulation of different CO2 enrichment scenarios. The natural seawater used originates from a sedimentation pond fed directly by the lagoon during high tides and is pumped through a sandbed filter before entering the systems. CO2 levels are established by bubbling CO2 directly into the header tank of each system. The CO2 injection is controlled by the pH of the seawater exiting the header tank using pH PID controllers (EXAtx 450; Yokogawa, Tokyo, Japan). The PAR radiation, pH and temperature of each header tank are continuously recorded. The three independent systems are flexible and able to support various types and numbers of experimental tanks with capacities of 5, 25, 110 and 650L, depending on the required experimental design and model organism.
