What is EMBRC Sweden

EMBRC Sweden is the Swedish node of EMBRC – a pan-European research infrastructure made up of a network of research organisations and marine stations across Europe that accelerates marine biology and ecology research through its knowledge, expertise, and services.
Sweden joined EMBRC in 2022 but, prior to officially joining the network, many of its institutions had been actively working with EMBRC partners for more than 20 years. Through its partners, EMBRC Sweden can offer researchers access to 7 marine research sites along the Swedish coastline. EMBRC Sweden can support researchers through several access programmes and through guest research services at the Swedish marine stations.
Represented by the Swedish Research Council, EMBRC Sweden is led by the University of Gothenburg.

EMBRC SWEDEN’S Marine Sites
How EMBRC Sweden supports researchers

EMBRC Sweden offers a reliable, effective and collaborative infrastructure providing access to marine ecosystems, organisms and marine research facilities along the entire Swedish coastline. Sweden’s network of marine research stations stretches from its deep near-Atlantic environments in the eastern North Sea to sub-arctic ecosystems in the Northern Baltic Sea. The profound salinity gradient across these regions is unique in Europe so it is important to be able to cover this as well as Sweden’s deep benthic and pelagic habitats and shallow environments along the shoreline.

EMBRC Sweden allows researchers to observe or sample these ecosystems and conduct experiments on biological responses to ocean acidification, carbon sequestration, aquaculture and ocean observation. Many of EMBRC’s Swedish stations implement marine innovation programmes related to seafood production, autonomous monitoring, environmental DNA, ocean acidification and adaptive management. These programmes offer additional opportunities for research and collaboration with academic and industry users across Europe and beyond.
