Challenge using EMO BON data
PEN03: Tracking Marine Biodiversity: An Interactive Genomics Explorer for Europe by Daniel Kamazawa
What is Ocean Hackathon®?

Ocean Hackathon® is a non-stop, 48-hour innovation sprint where teams develop working prototypes and explore real-world applications using marine data.

The European Marine Biological Resource Centre (EMBRC) will grant Ocean Hackathon® 2025 participants exclusive access to selected genomic datasets from EMO BON, Europe’s first marine genomic biodiversity observatory.

Quote

“We are making genomic data sets available to inspire the participants and to promote innovative projects around biodiversity and the sea”

Challenges supported by EMBRC

EMBRC (European Marine Biological Resource Centre) is proud to support an inspiring challenge at Ocean Hackathon 2025:

  • PEN03: Tracking Marine Biodiversity – An Interactive Genomics Explorer for Europe (Daniel Kamazawa)

The Challenge will leverage EMO BON data, among other resources, to develop innovative solutions. Participants will be guided by our EMO BON data representative, Christina Pavloudi, to make the most of these valuable datasets

Data Scientist at the EMBRC – European Marine Biological Resource Centre, Christina Pavloudi is a specialist in EMO BON genomic and biodiversity data. She holds a PhD in Marine Sciences and has expertise in microbial ecology, metagenomics, and eDNA metabarcoding. Christina has coordinated international projects and published extensively. At the hackathon, she will guide teams in making the most of EMBRC’s marine data.

PEN03 — Tracking Marine Biodiversity: An Interactive Genomics Explorer for Europe

Challenge Owner: Daniel Kumazawa, University of Tromso

Help Daniel Kamazawa build a web-based tool to safeguard marine life. This challenge aims to create an interactive platform that allows everyone — from citizens to policymakers — to explore marine biodiversity across Europe, using genomic and environmental data.

The Goal:

Develop a front-end prototype that enables users to:

  • Visualise species geolocation from EMO BON
  • Filter biodiversity indices by time and space
  • Track species presence and biodiversity hotspots
  • Overlay environmental layers (e.g. temperature, salinity) from EMODnet
  • Add human activity layers from Global Fishing Watch
  • Compare trends relevant to EOVs, EBVs, and MSFD

Skills Needed:

  • Web developer (frontend/backend)
  • Data analyst
  • Marine biologist
  • Genomic data specialist
  • Oceanographer
  • Biotechnologist
