Exploring cryopreservation for marine microalgae

Insa Mannott and Imke Lang, researchers in marine biotechnology, applied to ASSEMBLE Plus to advance their work on cryopreservation of red microalgae. Their goal: to establish a cell bank for production strains, ensuring high viability after thawing and maintaining productivity in fermentation processes.

At the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS / EMBRC UK), they tested different cryopreservation protocols and learned new cultivation techniques for strain maintenance and purification. The collaboration with the CCAP team provided access to specialised infrastructure and expertise, enabling them to refine their methods.

Outcomes and impact

The project helped identify effective cryopreservation protocols, supporting the development of standardised procedures. The experience also strengthened scientific exchange, with the SAMS team offering valuable support.

Quote

At CCAP/SAMS, we got the opportunity to test different cryopreservation protocols for various strains of red microalgae. We also learned new cultivation techniques for strain maintenance and purification.

EMBRC’s role

Through EMBRC’s Transnational Access, the researchers accessed SAMS’ facilities, including expertise and equipment, which were essential for testing and refining their protocols.

Next steps

The results will contribute to establishing reliable cryopreservation methods for marine microalgae, ensuring long-term viability and quality for industrial applications.

ASSEMBLE Plus: Association of European Marine Biological Laboratories Expanded

ASSEMBLE Plus is a Horizon 2020-funded project which brings together 32 marine stations and institutes. Coordinated by EMBRC, the project provides research and networking opportunities to scientists in Europe and beyond to enhance marine biology research.
