Environmental monitoring and identification of alien species

After our conversation with Carmem Manes at MicroSense, the EMBRC Tech Webinar series returns with a new session on marine observation, this time focusing on how emerging technologies are helping us better understand, monitor, and protect our marine ecosystems.
In this session, Justine Pagnier, conservation ecologist and PhD at the University of Gothenburg, will join EMBRC’s Industrial Liaison Officer Mery Piña to explore how tools such as eDNA, ARMS (Autonomous Reef Monitoring Structures), and imaging technologies are transforming environmental monitoring. The conversation will also touch on how these methods can support sustainable development in key marine sectors like fisheries, aquaculture, and offshore energy.
About Justine Pagnier
Justine Pagnier is a conservation ecologist from France with a background in ecology and conservation biology. Her academic path has taken her across Europe, particularly Sweden and Portugal, where she developed a strong interest in marine ecosystems and coastal biodiversity.
Since joining the European Marine Omics Biodiversity Observation Network (EMO BON) over two years ago, Justine has worked on advancing omics-based biodiversity monitoring—standardising workflows, managing ARMS data, and enabling molecular data integration across observatories. More recently, her research has focused on detecting and forecasting non-indigenous species (NIS) through eDNA metabarcoding and biodiversity modelling.
In November 2024, she began a PhD at the University of Gothenburg, continuing her work with EMO BON and expanding her research on how marine observation can inform global conservation efforts.

- Insights into how marine observation data informs marine management and conservation
- Applications of eDNA and omics tools for detecting non-indigenous species (NIS)
- The role of standardised data in large-scale marine monitoring networks
- Opportunities and challenges in supporting the Blue Bioeconomy through better environmental monitoring
